Six Friends, One Tuk-Tuk

Tsabit Abdurrazzaq Mumtaz
Software Engineering at IDN

A few days after our first trip to MBK, we decided to go back.

There was one small problem.

I still had a souvenir that I wanted to buy, but I hadn't had the chance to get it during our first visit. So I invited five of my friends, and the six of us planned another trip to MBK.

We left around 10 in the morning.

Everything was going normally at first. We were just excited to explore the city again, maybe buy some things, and spend time together.

But when we finally arrived at MBK, I went straight to the place where I wanted to buy the souvenir.

And then...

It was sold out. 💀

After traveling all the way there, waking up early, and bringing five friends with me, the thing I actually wanted to buy was no longer available.

At that point, we had two choices:

Go home...

or find somewhere else to go.

Obviously, we chose the second one.

We decided to go to Asiatique.

But this time, we wanted to try something different.

We had already used trains, buses, and boats several times during our stay in Bangkok.

So we thought:

“Why don't we try a tuk-tuk?”

And that's how one of the funniest transportation experiences of our Thailand trip happened.

There were six of us.

And somehow, we decided to fit all six people into one tuk-tuk.

Yes.

Six people.

One tuk-tuk.

From MBK to Asiatique.

I don't even know why we thought that was a good idea. 😂

The total price was around 400 baht, and honestly, even before the tuk-tuk started moving, we were already laughing about how ridiculous the situation was.

Once we started driving, it became even more fun.

The tuk-tuk was open on the sides, so we could feel the wind and see the streets of Bangkok directly. Compared to sitting inside a normal car, it felt much more exciting.

We were basically sitting together, squeezing into the back, while the driver moved through the streets of Bangkok.

Every time the tuk-tuk accelerated, turned, or passed through traffic, we were holding on and laughing.

It was definitely not the most comfortable ride.

But comfort wasn't really the point.

We wanted an experience.

And we definitely got one.

After some time, we finally arrived at Asiatique.

It felt pretty satisfying because even though our original plan had failed, we somehow ended up having an even more memorable experience.

Another first happened there too.

I exchanged money at a currency exchange for the first time.

It was a pretty simple thing, but because I had never done it myself before, it was still interesting to experience.

After exploring Asiatique for a while, we eventually headed back to our accommodation.

Looking back, the whole day was kind of funny.

We went to MBK specifically because I wanted to buy a souvenir.

The souvenir was sold out.

So we changed our plan.

Then six of us squeezed into one tuk-tuk and went all the way to Asiatique.

Sometimes the best travel memories aren't the things you planned.

They're the random decisions you make after the original plan completely fails. 😂

And honestly, I'm glad that souvenir was sold out.

Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have experienced one of the most random and funniest rides of my Thailand journey.

Six friends. One tuk-tuk. 400 baht. Zero regrets. 🇹🇭🛺
